# The 2025 Campaign to the Almost Forgotten SS Tilawa

The SS Tilawa’s story is one of resilience, remembrance, and historical significance that deserves to be preserved for generations. Nobody knows that better than the pioneering deep-sea specialists at Magellan Limited. Globally recognized for their groundbreaking underwater mapping and wreck documentation, Magellan has led some of the most advanced deep-sea projects in history, including the first full-scale 3D digital twin of the Titanic.

To spread awareness, record history, and honor those lost at sea, the 2025 Tilawa Commemoration Campaign returned to the SS Tilawa shipwreck – a complex and costly undertaking. With sufficient sponsorship, revolutionary photogrammetry preservation of the site was made possible through Magellan’s expertise.

In January 2025, Magellan sailed to the SS Tilawa to place a commemorative plaque on the wreck site while capturing a remarkable 3D digital model of the vessel in its current state. As a symbol of remembrance, the plaque features the first-ever strike from the 2025 [Tilawa Silver Krugerrand](https://www.monex.com/ss-tiliwa-silver-treasure-krugerrands-for-sale/) dies, bearing the coveted SS Tilawa privy mark over South Africa’s National Springbok.

The plaque reads:

*In Memory of Those Aboard the SS Tilawa (1942)

Lost to the sea, but not forgotten.

This plaque honours the 280 lives tragically lost

and the survivors who endured.

May peace be with them, and may their story

inspire remembrance and reflection. *

This commercially funded campaign both honors the SS Tilawa’s legacy and promotes Tilawa Silver, bringing awareness to its intended destination: the South African Mint, home of the Silver Krugerrand. At the same time, it highlights the lasting impact of this historical event, placing a tangible testament plaque in tribute to those aboard. Undoubtedly, the SS Tilawa’s silver and its legacy are meant to be shared.
