Gold American Eagles Design and Specifications

The largest coin produced by the U.S. Mint, the 1 oz American Eagle gold coin is the first to be authorized by Congress and backed by the mint’s weight, content and purity guarantee. Each coin consists of 1 troy ounce of .9167 fine gold as well as a small amount of copper and silver alloy to help maintain a pristine appearance and maximize resale value.

The obverse of 1 oz American Eagle gold coins features Lady Liberty holding an olive branch and a torch with a rising sun and the U.S. Capitol dome in the background; and is inscribed with “Liberty,” the issue date and mint mark.

In celebration of the series’ 35th anniversary, the 2021 one ounce Gold American Eagle’s obverse was slightly modified to more closely realize the artist’s original vision, however, the overall design remains intact.

From 1986 to 2021, the coin’s reverse featured a male bald eagle grasping an olive branch in his talons, flying toward his mate and her hatchlings in a nest. Halfway through the 2021 minting year, the reverse design was changed featuring an artfully intricate depiction of an eagle’s head. The latest coins have also been updated with enhanced security features.

The one-ounce Gold American Eagle weighs 1.0909 troy ounces (or 33.931 grams), contains one troy ounce of pure gold, and has a face value of $50. It is sold in units of ten one-ounce coins.

The quarter-ounce Gold American Eagle has a total weight of 0.2727 troy ounces (or 8.483 grams), a quarter ounce of pure gold, and a face value of $10. It is sold in units of 20 coins.

The tenth-ounce gold coin weighs 0.1091 troy ounces (or 3.393 grams), contains a tenth ounce of pure gold, and has a face value of $5. It is sold in units of 20 coins.

How long will it take to receive my gold?

On average, physical metal will leave the shipping facility two to five days following confirmed reliable good funds. Upon receipt of payment and confirmation of reliable good funds, Monex will direct one of its independent shipping facilities to package and assign it to either USPS or UPS for delivery. We will deliver your gold with full title and ownership in your name to one of the independent bank/depository facilities that provide storage for Monex customers.
