As investor demand for silver continues to grow, so does the need for different types of investment strategies. One potential strategy is to buy silver bars. Monex offers two .999 fine silver bullion bar options. Both the 100 ounce and the standard industry unit 1,000 ounce silver bullion bars are available for personal delivery or storage. Each of these bars are hallmarked to certify weight and purity.

About Silver Bars
How precise is the weight of silver bars? Are small variations normal?
Silver bars are produced to strict manufacturing standards, and the stamped weight reflects the intended silver content of the bar. Minor variations in dimensions, surface finish, or appearance may occur between refiners, especially with cast bars, but the silver content and purity remain consistent with the markings on the bar.
What are the major refiners Monex sources silver bars from?
Monex sources silver bars from well-established refiners, including recognized global manufacturers, Johnson Matthey, and other reputable refiners that meet industry standards for purity and quality.
What silver bar sizes are available from Monex?
Monex offers silver bars in several popular investment sizes, including 10 oz, 1 kilo, 100 oz, and 1000 oz bars. Each size offers different considerations related to upfront cost, storage, and per-ounce pricing.
What’s the difference between cast and minted silver bars?
Cast silver bars are created by pouring molten silver into molds, which often produces a more traditional appearance with rounded edges or natural surface variations. Minted silver bars are precision-cut and typically feature sharper edges, uniform dimensions, and a more polished finish.
Both can contain the same silver purity. The primary difference is in manufacturing style and appearance.
What are the most popular silver bar sizes?
Popularity in bar sizes varies from investor to investor and what they are looking for from a precious metals investment. 100 ounce silver bars are an ideal investment grade bar which is well known to the market. The 1,000-ounce silver bar is most popular among investors looking to store or liquidate from an investment.
Buying & Selling Process
Are silver bar purchases reportable to the IRS?
No. Silver bar purchases are not reported to the IRS. Reporting requirements may apply when metals are sold back to a dealer under certain conditions.
Investors should consult a tax professional for guidance, as reporting thresholds and requirements can vary.
Can I sell my silver bars back to Monex?
Yes. Monex maintains an active buy-back market for many of the precious metals products it sells. Sell-back orders are handled by phone with an Account Representative and are subject to product verification and current market conditions.
Investment Insights
Are silver bars a good hedge against inflation?
Silver has historically been viewed as a hard asset that may attract investor demand during periods of inflation, currency weakness, or broader economic uncertainty. While silver prices can fluctuate, many investors view physical silver as one way to diversify beyond paper assets.
How much silver is recommended for a diversified portfolio?
There is no universal amount of silver that fits every investor. Allocation decisions often depend on financial goals, risk tolerance, time horizon, and how physical precious metals fit within a broader portfolio.
Is it better to buy one large bar or several small ones?
Larger silver bars can reduce the cost per ounce, while smaller bars may offer more flexibility when buying, storing, or selling. The right choice often depends on budget, liquidity preferences, and long-term ownership goals.
Why invest in silver bars over silver coins or rounds?
Silver bars often carry lower premiums per ounce than silver coins or rounds because production and distribution costs are typically lower. Investors focused primarily on silver weight and cost per ounce often consider bars, while coins may appeal to those who prefer government mint recognition or smaller units.
How can I get more information about investing in silver bullion?
The best places to get information for investing in silver bullion would be our Silver Investing page. You will also be able to subscribe to our Precious Metals Review (PMR) and our Precious Metals News section. Both of these subscriptions help to keep you informed on up-to-date information on the precious metals markets.
Should I invest in gold or silver bullion?
Investments in either gold or silver are completely reliant on your personal preferences. The most important consideration is to be sure you are fully informed in the metals markets. Our website offers amazing resources to help you decide which investment is right for you. To understand more about why you should invest in gold, silver, palladium or platinum, visit the page on "Why Precious Metals" page and also visit our Special Offers page which contains reports analyzing each of the four precious metals.
Why should I invest in silver bullion bars?
Investors and experts have often recommended that 10% to 20% of an investor's assets should be invested in precious metals but the reasons for investing don't stop there. Throughout history, precious metals, including silver, have been a solid hedge against a declining U.S. dollar. While silver has experienced more volatility in the past, compared to gold, silver is still a solid investment.
IRA & Retirement Options
Which silver bars are acceptable in an IRA?
Silver bars must meet IRS fineness standards to qualify for inclusion in a self-directed IRA. Acceptable bars are .999 fine or higher and produced by refiners accredited by the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) or another approved exchange.
10 oz silver bars, 1 kilo silver bars, 100 oz silver bars, and 1000 oz silver bars offered through Monex meet these standards and are eligible for IRA investment.
How do I add silver bars to my IRA through Monex?
Monex works with IRS-approved custodians that specialize in self-directed precious metal IRAs. Your Monex account representative can help guide you:
- Open or transfer a self-directed IRA with an approved custodian.
- Fund the account through a contribution, transfer, or rollover.
- Select the gold bars you want to purchase.
- Authorize delivery directly to the IRA depository.
All purchases for IRAs are titled in the name of the custodian on your behalf, and your metals are stored in an approved depository under your IRA account.
Pricing & Premiums
Do silver bars have lower premiums than coins?
In many cases, silver bars carry lower premiums per ounce than silver coins because production and distribution costs are typically lower. Premiums can still vary based on bar size, market demand, and availability.
How often are silver bar prices updated on Monex.com?
The Monex website and mobile app provide live market pricing that updates routinely throughout the trading day to reflect real-time movements in global silver markets. Because precious metals markets move quickly, all prices remain subject to confirmation at the time an order is placed.
Why does the price of silver bars differ from the spot price of silver?
The spot price reflects only the raw market value of silver itself. When purchasing physical silver bars, additional costs are included in the final price.
These costs may include refining, fabrication, dealer premiums, handling, and delivery expenses. Larger silver bars are often priced closer to spot than smaller products because production and distribution costs are spread over more ounces.
Monex quotes Ask and Bid prices that reflect real-world buy and sell rates for specific products in the physical bullion market.
What factors influence the value of silver bars?
As a commodity, the price of silver fluctuates from minute to minute throughout the day and from day to day throughout the week. The current price of silver is the result of all buyers and sellers across the globe meeting at transaction prices, according to combined supply and demand forces. The availability of silver supplies from mines, scrap recovery, government stockpile disposals, and investor liquidations, versus demand from industrial uses, jewelry, and silverware fabrication, as well as investor acquisitions, is the primary driver of silver’s worldwide market prices.
Today, the factors most notably influencing silver prices are:
- The unparalleled degree of geopolitical uncertainty makes silver an exceptional investment alternative.
- Ever-increasing industrial uses due to silver’s unique reflective and conductive properties, especially in batteries and electronics.
- Growth in demand for medical applications using silver as a more organic antibiotic agent for germicide and disinfectant purposes.
- The loss in silver demand from the declining film photography sector. However significant, declining photography demand is partially replaced by incredible demand from electronics as film’s replacement.
- One sector with exceptional potential is the ‘photovoltaic’ necessity of silver in solar panels, which could see phenomenal global growth.
What makes Monex silver bar pricing competitive?
It is easy to confirm that Monex offers some of the best prices on 1 oz gold bars by comparing our prices with those of other dealers. But what sets Monex apart is that we also feature transparent pricing. We publish both ask and bid prices on our website. That “spread” – the difference between our “ask” and “bid” prices – tends to be far less than many other dealers. We also offer lower Atlas Preferred Prices on purchases made with the Monex Atlas Account on several of our bullion and coin products. Call us today to learn more about Monex’s pricing advantages.
Where can I see live Monex prices for silver?
The best place to find live prices for silver is on the Monex Live Prices page and through the Monex Bullion Investor smartphone app available for both Apple and Android smartphones. Along with silver pricing you will also have access to live prices for gold, platinum, and palladium.

Storage, Delivery & Insurance
Can I store silver bars through Monex?
Yes. Monex offers storage solutions for qualifying precious metals through approved depository arrangements, subject to product eligibility and account setup.
How are silver bars packaged and delivered?
Silver bars are securely packaged for transit, with packaging varying by product size and manufacturer. Monex ships precious metals through fully insured carriers, and tracking information is provided once the shipment is released.
Is my silver investment insured?
Silver shipments are typically insured by the carrier in transit until delivery is confirmed. Metals stored through approved depository arrangements are subject to the terms and protections of the storage program.
What are the best ways to store silver bars securely at home?
If you choose to store silver at home, use a high-quality, fire-rated safe that is anchored securely to a permanent structure and concealed from view. For larger holdings, professional vault storage through Monex or another qualified depository may be considered.
How long will it take to receive my silver?
Almost every investment in physical metal is unique. For this reason, calculating shipping timing for a unique silver purchase is not a universal answer. The delivery of your metal is dependent on a variety of factors, including the quantity of metal, the time of your purchase, and other relevant details.
On average, physical metal will leave the shipping facility two to five days after confirmed, reliable good funds are received. Upon receipt of payment and confirmation of reliable good funds, Monex will direct one of its independent shipping facilities to package and assign it to either USPS or UPS for delivery. You will then receive an email or a telephone notification of your shipment’s tracking number.
During periods of extremely high shipping volume, you will be notified if any delays are anticipated. Call a Monex account representative to learn more about estimated shipping times for your unique investment.
