Silver American Eagle Design and Specifications
Authorized by Congress in 1985 and first minted in 1986, Silver American Eagles are pure .999 fine silver, the finest silver coins ever distributed in the United States. Minted in the U.S. Mint’s West Point, New York facility, each coin contains one troy ounce of pure silver, measures 1.598″ in diameter with a thickness of .117,” and has a face value of one dollar.
The Silver Eagle coin’s obverse design is based on the U.S. “Walking Liberty” half dollar, first minted in 1916 and designed by Adolph Alexander Weinman. The reverse side features a bald eagle and shield, with 13 stars, representing the 13 original American colonies, positioned above the eagle’s head.
The American Silver Eagle has been and continues to be the most popular silver coin series worldwide. In fact, between 2008 and 2015, American Silver Eagle coins enjoyed record-breaking sales each consecutive year. The series set an unprecedented sales total of over 40 million coins in 2014. The following year, Silver Eagle coin sales exceeded that total with a record 47.3 million coins sold.

How does the American Silver Eagle compare to sterling silver?
Bullion grade silver is at least 99% pure silver. Pure silver bullion is not as durable as sterling silver, which is 92.5% pure silver with the balance being an alloy to offer better durability. The vast majority of circulating silver coinage of years gone by, when coins were real money rather than fiat currency, was closer to sterling purity than bullion investment quality silver.
How pure is the U.S. Silver Eagle coin?
The Silver American Eagles contain precisely one troy ounce of pure silver and contain 99.9% fine silver.
What is an American Silver Eagle coin?
The United States Mint issues Silver American Eagles as legal tender bullion coins for investment purposes, under congressional authority. The family of U.S. Mint American Eagles consists of a one ounce silver piece and four sizes of gold American Eagle coins. Though the U.S. Silver Eagle is technically money, its face value is insignificant as compared to its intrinsic value, and thereby does not circulate as coinage.
What is the current Silver Eagle purchase price?
The purchase price of a one ounce American Silver Eagle is at the Monex Ask price. In addition, there are charges such as commission and shipping. There is no shipping charge if you select depository delivery. Today’s Ask price per coin for buying in units of one hundred is: 29.69.
What is the Silver Eagle Bullion coin’s first year of issue?
The oldest Silver American Eagle bullion coin is dated 1986. That year was also the very first year of issue for the U.S. Mint Bullion Coin program.
