Gold, Growth & Urbanization Makes Way for Modern Australia
Although the Australian gold rush officially began in 1851, British prospector Edward Hargraves widely publicized his discovery of gold nearly two decades earlier, in 1832. This golden discovery brought an influx of new immigrants to the remote continent. Just eight years later, six distinct colonies came into being. By 1901, these colonies united to form the Commonwealth of Australia under the British Empire.
Between 1851 and 1871, gold became Australia’s largest export. This gold rush period significantly boosted Australia’s economy and population, stimulating the demand for housing, consumer goods and services, and infrastructure. By the late 1880s, over half of Australia’s population lived in urban areas. At the time, this made Australia more urbanized than the United Kingdom, United States and Canada.
A Strategy Success Story: Australian Gold Nugget to the Kangaroo Design
Given gold’s profound influence on Australia’s economic and social growth, it was no surprise that the Gold Nugget became the emblem for its first legal tender gold bullion coin. The Australian Gold Nugget, released nearly a century later in 1986, drew design inspiration from the original gold nugget discovered in the gold rush days, paying homage to gold’s lasting impact on the continent.
However, in 1990, the Perth Mint boldly redesigned the coin, replacing the nugget with a kangaroo and renaming it the Australian Gold Kangaroo. These changes generated significant public interest, and the coin’s popularity skyrocketed. Clearly, the kangaroo made for a more attractive, recognizable design element.
Since the transition, the Australian Gold Kangaroo has become the Perth Mint’s longest-running and most globally recognized coin. Over the years, it has adapted to reflect both tradition and modernity.

Changes Keep on Coming: Introducing the 1st King Charles III Gold Coins
The Perth Mint strategically releases a new Kangaroo gold coin design every year. According to the mint, this annual update increases the coin’s numismatic value above its inherent bullion value.
The original design, created by Dr. Stuart Devlin in 1990, featured a kangaroo leaping across the Australian outback. Since then, the reverse design has regularly changed to showcase new interesting interpretations of the iconic marsupial.
Queen Elizabeth II has been featured on the obverse of every coin from the first Gold Nugget coin in 1986 until her passing in 2022. Starting with the 2024 edition, Kangaroo gold coins feature King Charles III. It is the first bullion coin to feature the new monarch.
How Design Impacts Australian Kangaroo Gold Coins’ Value
Under the Australian Currency Act of 1965, gold Kangaroo coins are considered legal tender with one troy ounce .9999 fine gold. The Australian Kangaroo gold coin’s recognizable and beautiful design, purity and storied gold history make them desired by collectors and investors alike.
The Perth Mint attributes the gold coin’s popularity to an affinity for Australian wildlife, a strong connection to the country’s diverse culture and the coin’s annual design update. These qualities, according to the mint, offer a uniqueness not found in other gold bullion coins and, therefore, create a higher intrinsic value in each gold kangaroo coin they produce.
The World’s Largest Gold Coin: Celebrating the Kangaroo’s Success
In 2012, the Perth Mint struck the ‘World’s Largest Gold Coin’ to celebrate the enduring success and popularity of the 1 oz Gold Australian Kangaroo coin. Weighing one tonne and crafted from 99.99% pure gold, this massive Gold Kangaroo coin is the biggest, heaviest and most valuable gold bullion coin ever produced anywhere. The one tonne gold giant still holds the Guinness Book of World Records title as the largest gold coin and is permanently displayed in The Perth Mint’s Gold Exhibition.
