From Growing Pains to Growth: Monex Overcomes Early Challenges

In the late 1960s, Monex* faced several challenges. As a result, Louis Carabini and his team were forced to come up with creative solutions and implement them post haste. Through determination and practical solutions, they overcame these challenges, effectively laying the foundation for decades of success in the precious metals market.

*As referenced herein, “Monex” refers collectively to the various entities founded and operated since 1967 by Louis Carabini, selling precious metals coins and bullion to collectors and investors. These entities include, among others, Pacific Coast Coin Exchange, Monex International, Ltd. and Monex Deposit Company.

Tackling Manual Sorting Inefficiencies

One of the early challenges was the inefficiency of manually sorting coins. As demand for silver coins and transaction volume increased, the labor-intensive sorting process from remaining circulating coinage became impractical, if not impossible. Louis and his team knew they needed to find a new avenue to source silver coins to keep up with demand and stay on track with customer deliveries.
Louis recounted the difficulty of those early days:

“We were literally drowning in coins. Every day was a race against time to sort, bag, and deliver them. It became clear we needed a more efficient way to handle the growing volume.”

Realizing they needed a more efficient solution, Louis capitalized on new technology that automated the sorting process. Coin-sorting machines could automatically distinguish silver coins using electrical resistance and weight. The perfect source for fresh coins was Nevada’s casinos, and Louis built a thriving wholesale buying business in short order to support demand.

Dealing with New Regulations

In 1968, the California Legislature passed the Commodity Advisors Act, requiring commodity-based businesses to register as commodity advisors. This new law presented a significant hardship, as it required compliance with a set of regulations that were not yet fully defined.
Louis recalled the confusion surrounding this new regulation:

“When this State law was brought to our attention, I engaged our first lawyer, Fred Marks, to prepare the appropriate forms. When we asked for the application from the Department of Corporations, they informed us that it had not yet been prepared.”

The lack of clear guidance from the state added to the challenge. Rather than halt operations and risk losing momentum, Louis and his team navigated the uncertainty head-on.

“I finally decided it was ridiculous to close since it was not possible to comply, and besides, I had bills to pay. I re-opened, finally received the forms, filed the application, and fired the lawyer.”

This experience highlighted the importance of adaptability and determination. Louis and his team quickly realized that flexibility was essential to overcoming obstacles and succeeding in a constantly changing industry like the precious metals market.

Expanding Access with Financial Solutions

Amidst the regulatory changes, the team was also focused on expanding its customer base. One effective strategy was to introduce financing options for silver coin purchases. By collaborating with local banks, such as Farmers and Merchants Bank, they enabled more customers to invest in silver, even if they did not choose to pay the entire amount upfront.

Louis explained the significance of this initiative:

“We saw an opportunity to make silver investing more accessible to a broader audience. By offering financing, we were able to bring in customers who might not have had the cash upfront but still wanted to invest in silver.”

This approach opened up a broader customer base, reaching those interested in silver but needing flexible payment plans. The relationship with the bank also added a layer of credibility, reassuring customers that their silver coins were secure.

Overcoming Operational Hurdles

As the company grew, logistical challenges increased. One memorable example was the difficulty in transporting large amounts of coins. Louis shared a personal story that highlighted the lengths to which the company went to ensure customer satisfaction:

“When I made deliveries of the coins to the bank, I’d simply pile them in my car, the family station wagon, and haul them there. I discovered that the car would hold a maximum of 31 bags, provided they were very evenly spaced from front seat to tailgate, and there were no bumps in the road.”

This story shows the hands-on approach of the company’s early years. Everyone, including Louis, was involved in daily operations focused on overcoming any challenges.

Setting the Stage for Future Growth

By addressing these challenges head-on, Louis Carabini paved the way for Monex’s future success. The early experiences taught the team important lessons in adaptability and resilience, qualities that would help Monex grow and solidify its position in the precious metals market.
