The History Behind British Britannia Silver Coins

The 1 oz British Britannia Silver Coin is rich in history and national significance. Dating back to ancient times, the image of Britannia was featured on Roman coinage to depict Britain’s successful invasion and colonization by Roman Emperor Hadrian in 111AD. During the Roman Empire’s reign, it was common to personify countries as female figures. ‘Britannia’ was the word that Romans used for Great Britain. The name is Latin and derives from Greek words that designated a collection of islands, a perfect personification of the British Isles.

A Timeless National Symbol

Over many centuries, Britannia evolved into a beloved and iconic symbol of Great Britain’s fortitude, protection, unity, and liberty. Her image has appeared on coins issued under every British monarch since the 17th century. Although her portrayal has changed over the years, one element has remained constant: she is always depicted with water and waves, symbolizing her role as the great protector and ruler of the seas. This maritime association reflects Britain’s history as a formidable naval power.

The Role of Britannia in British Identity

Britannia became a very popular figure in times of war, representing British liberties and democracy. She was a symbol of defense and a reminder of the values Britain upheld, including freedom and unity. The British people take great pride in the image of Britannia and the power and history she represents.

The Introduction of Britannia on British Coinage

Britannia first appeared on English coinage during King Charles II’s reign in 1672. At this point, Britannia became a symbol of Britain’s identity worldwide. Over the years, her image has graced British currency, with a few design changes to keep up with the times.

Modern-Day Controversy and Continued Popularity

In 1968, while the UK was preparing for decimalization, it was announced that Brit annia would not appear on the new coinage. This decision caused such public outrage that it was brought to the House of Commons and eventually overturned. As a result, the Britannia appeared on the UK’s 1969 50p coin, where she is illustrated holding a trident and an olive branch.

The Introduction of Britannia Bullion Coins

In more recent times, the Royal Mint expanded Britannia’s influence into the bullion market. In 1987, the Mint began producing Britannia British gold bullion coins, then adding silver coins in 1997 and platinum coins in 2018. Some financial historians suggest that the Royal Mint created the 1 oz gold Britannia coin to compete directly with the popular 1 oz South African Krugerrand, which had dominated the bullion market for years.

The Birth of the Silver Britannia Coin

With the growth of the bullion market in the 1980s, the Silver Britannia Bullion coin was created to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the gold Britannia bullion coin. The 1997 Silver Britannia 1 oz coin was a proof coin minted in 958.0 purity, highlighting its status as a high-quality collectible investment option.

In 2013, the Royal Mint boosted the silver content of the standard 1 oz Britannia coin to 999.0 fine silver to cater to a growing demand for more options. This decision reflected technological advancements and a desire to make the coin more attractive to modern bullion investors.

Recent Developments in the Silver Britannia Series

The Royal Mint continues to innovate within the Britannia series. Most recently, in 2023, the Mint introduced new 1/10 oz and ¼ oz variations of the Silver Britannia bullion coin, offering even more flexibility to collectors and investors. These smaller denominations allow for a broader market reach, potential utility as medium of exchange and further solidify Britannia’s role in British bullion history.
