“Platinum prices declined in September but held up better than palladium. Platinum is benefitting from the diversification of its use in the auto sector as well as from con-
strained mine supply from South Africa.
Unlike palladium, which is used primarily in gasoline passenger vehicles, platinum is used in both gasoline and diesel passenger vehicles. It was reintroduced in gasoline passenger vehicles in recent years following the sharp run-up in palladium prices. While this reintroduction has hurt palladium fabrication demand, it has benefited platinum by expanding its role in gasoline autocatalysts and increasing its share of the platinum group metals used in passenger vehicles with internal combustion engines and hybrids. It is also used extensively in diesel catalysts fitted to commercial vehicles.”
