⅒ oz American Gold Eagle Coins Design and Specifications
The smallest in the series, the 1/10 oz American Gold Eagle offers an economical way to add this illustrious coin to your investment portfolio. Introduced in 1986 as the first modern-day gold coins to be authorized by Congress, the renowned series quickly became one of the world’s most popular. Each coin is backed by the U.S. Mint’s weight, content and purity guarantee and consists of 22-karat gold mixed with a small amount of copper and silver to strengthen the coin. This combination minimizes damage to the coin’s surface, which in turn, maximizes resale value.
To celebrate the series’ 35th anniversary, the tenth-ounce Gold American Eagle’s obverse and reverse designs were modified to more closely realize the artist’s original vision. Prior to the 2021 release, the obverse featured Lady Liberty holding a torch and an olive branch with a rising sun and the U.S. Capitol behind her. All mintage years of the 1/10 oz American Eagle gold coins are inscribed with the word “Liberty” and the issue date.
Up until the design changes in 2021, the coin’s reverse featured a male bald eagle grasping an olive branch in his talons, flying toward his mate and her hatchlings in a nest. Since then, the reverse features an intricate depiction of an eagle’s head. The latest coins have also been updated with enhanced security features.
