¼ oz Gold Eagle Coins Design and Specifications

For centuries, gold has been considered a trustworthy investment for those seeking opportunities to diversify a traditional paper asset portfolio. Fractional gold coins, like the ¼ oz American Eagle, offer an affordable way to enter the precious metals market or add to an existing portfolio.

In 1986, the American Eagle Gold Coin series became the first modern-day gold bullion coins to be authorized by Congress. Each coin consists of 22-karat gold and a small amount of alloy to increase strength and resist scratching, which in turn, maximizes resale value. The coin’s consistency is guaranteed to contain the specified quantity of gold, mined exclusively in the United States, and to meet the rigid quality standards of the U.S. Mint.

1/4 ounce gold american eagle coin obverse

In 2021, the ¼-ounce Gold American Eagle’s obverse and reverse designs were modified to celebrate the series’ 35th anniversary. Prior to the 2021 release, the obverse of the ¼ oz American Eagle gold coin featured Lady Liberty holding a torch and an olive branch with a rising sun and the U.S. Capitol behind her. Slight changes were made to these elements to more closely realize the artist’s original vision. All mintage years are inscribed with the word “Liberty” and the issue date.

From 1986 to 2021, the coin’s reverse featured a male bald eagle grasping an olive branch in his talons, flying toward his mate and her hatchlings in a nest. Since then, the reverse features an intricate depiction of an eagle’s head. The latest coins have also been updated with enhanced security features.

Frequently Asked Questions

About This Coin

What is an American Gold Eagle coin?

The United States Mint issues Gold American Eagles as legal tender gold bullion coins for investment purposes, under congressional authority. The family of Gold Eagles consists of four sizes and face values. Though they are technically money, their face value is insignificant compared to their intrinsic value, and they do not circulate as coinage. By far, one of the most popular and most liquid sizes of almost all coins is the one-ounce $50 face value American Gold Eagle.

In which year was the gold American Eagle first issued?

The oldest Gold American Eagle bullion coin has the date 1986. That year was the very first year of issue for the United States Mint Bullion Coin program.

Buying & Selling Process

How do I buy and receive Gold American Eagles?

Once you have decided on the quantity of Gold American Eagles to purchase, your Monex account representative will assist you in executing your order over the phone. Your purchase and price will be confirmed on a voice recorded line after your acknowledgment, and a written confirmation will be sent to you with the details of your order.

Payment may be made after you order, but must be initiated on the day of purchase, which means you must mail or wire funds on the day of your purchase. You can have your metal shipped to your home, made available for pick-up at over 30 facilities across the U.S. and Canada, or have your metal delivered to a bank/depository for storage.

Is there a minimum number of Gold American Eagles I must purchase in one transaction?

The one ounce Gold American Eagle coin is available from Monex individually or in units of ten; while each of the fractional Gold Eagle coins are sold in units of 20 coins. Buying and selling gold bullion coins in larger quantities offers greater efficiency, which means better pricing for you. Monex selects only the most popular and liquid investment grade products, and buying more than one coin has historically proven beneficial over our extensive over 50 years* years of experience.

Can I sell ¼ oz Gold American Eagles back to Monex?

Yes. Monex offers a two-way market for American Gold Eagles in standard sizes, including 1/4 oz coins. To sell, call a Monex account representative. Once the coins are received and verified, the sale price is agreed upon and payment is issued.

Investment Insights

How well have American Gold Eagle investments performed?

Over the long-term, Gold American Eagle investments have fared quite well. Since 2000, they have appreciated over 400% in value. See historical gold prices charts here.

Is the ¼ oz Gold Eagle a good entry point for new investors?

Yes. The ¼ oz Gold Eagle requires a smaller upfront investment than a 1 oz coin, which can make it appealing to newer buyers. On a per-ounce basis, fractional coins typically carry higher premiums than 1 oz coins, but they allow investors to purchase gold in smaller increments rather than committing to a full ounce at once.

IRA & Retirement Options

Are American Gold Eagles eligible for Precious Metals IRAs?

Yes. Though Gold American Eagle coins are just .9167 fine gold, being that Gold American Eagles are issued by the United States Mint, they are IRA approved gold coins for use in your gold IRA.

How do I add 1/4 oz Gold American Eagle coins to my IRA through Monex?

To add ¼ oz American Gold Eagles to an IRA, you will work directly with an IRS-approved custodian to establish and fund your IRA account. Your Account Representative will connect you with a custodian upon request.

Once your IRA is funded, Monex executes the purchase at your direction and arranges insured delivery to an approved depository in the custodian’s name, as required for IRA holdings.

Pricing & Premiums

What makes Monex 1/4 oz American Eagle gold coin pricing competitive?

It is easy to confirm that Monex offers some of the best prices on 1/4 oz American Eagle gold coins by comparing our prices with those of other dealers. But what sets Monex apart is that we also feature transparent pricing. We publish both ask and bid prices on our website. That “spread” – the difference between our “ask” and “bid” prices – tends to be far less than many other dealers. We also offer lower Atlas Preferred Prices on purchases made with the Monex Atlas Account on several of our bullion bar and coin products. Call us today to learn more about Monex’s pricing advantages.

How much does Monex charge in addition to the spot gold price?

Monex does not offer gold bars or gold coins at a spot gold price. The true spot gold price is merely a benchmark per-ounce price for gold, not a price for a particular product, and is a reference price associated with the present month of the COMEX futures contract. In fact, a genuine spot gold price is not truly a quote at all, because it is not where dealers offer to buy or sell, which are their ask and bid prices. Monex makes a market for buying and selling quoted as “Ask” and “Bid” prices. Ask prices for gold products reflect competitive marketplace conditions for a particular type of gold investment item. There are, however, charges that accompany transactions, which include buy/sell charges, shipping or storage fees depending if the customer chooses home or depository delivery. Monex quotes extremely competitive prices for gold bullion depository delivery. Monex publishes buy/sell commission charges, which depend on the size of a transaction. For greater transparency, the Monex marketplace is quoted live online on its Live Prices page or through the powerful Monex Bullion Investor smartphone app available for both Apple and Android smartphones.

What is the cost of a ¼ oz Gold American Eagle coin?

The price of a ¼ oz Gold Eagle is based on Monex’s current ask price and moves with the gold market throughout the trading day. Because prices change frequently, the most accurate quote is available by contacting an Account Representative or checking Monex’s live pricing.

How does the premium on a ¼ oz Gold Eagle compare to a 1 oz coin?

On a per-ounce basis, ¼ oz Gold Eagles typically command a higher premium than 1 oz Gold Eagles. The difference reflects higher production costs relative to gold content and increased demand for fractional sizes.

Storage, Delivery & Insurance

Are ¼ oz Gold Eagles easy to store or transport?

Yes. ¼ oz Gold Eagles are compact, durable, and easy to store in a home safe or secure deposit location. Their size also makes them practical to transport when needed.

How are ¼ oz Gold Eagle coins packaged for delivery?

¼ oz Gold Eagles are securely packaged and insured while in transit. Tracking information is provided once the shipment is sent.

Are my 1/4 oz American Eagle gold coins insured during delivery?

All gold coin shipments to you are insured against loss or damage in transit, whether delivered to your home or to a depository. If you decide to have your 1/4 oz American Eagle gold coins delivered to and stored by a bank/depository, it remains fully insured while in storage as well.

How does 1/4 oz Gold American Eagle storage work through Monex?

We will deliver your gold coins with full title and ownership in your name to one of the independent bank/depository facilities that provide storage for Monex customers. When your metal is received by the third-party depository, the facility's custodian will send you a document acknowledging receipt and verifying that you are the owner of the American Eagle gold coins being stored.
