Gold American Buffalo Design and Specifications
The American Buffalo is the United State’s first large-scale circulation of .9999 fine gold coins in the U.S. Mint’s history. With the mint’s weight, content and purity guarantee, this American-made gold beauty is backed by the United States government and offers investors all the security and liquidity of a world-class gold coin.
The obverse side of the American Gold Buffalo features the profile of a Native American man; while on the reverse side an American bison stands in profile, an image modeled after “Black Diamond,” a popular attraction in the New York Zoological Gardens in the early 20th century. The coin’s images were created by American sculptor James Earle Fraser and were previously featured on the Indian Head Nickel, also known as the Buffalo Nickel, minted in the U.S. from 1913 to 1938.

Each American Buffalo coin contains exactly one troy ounce of pure gold and measures approximately the same size as a U.S. half-dollar coin. Monex offers the 1 oz 24-karat gold American Buffalo in units of 10 coins. They can be purchased outright for personal delivery and are suitable for an IRA investment.
The gold American Buffalo carries a face value of $50 and is minted at the United States Mint in West Point, New York, but does not feature any mint mark. By law, all of the gold used in the production of the American Buffalo bullion coin must be from newly-mined sources within the United States.

Each American Buffalo coin has a face value of $50 and contains exactly one troy ounce of pure .9999 fine gold. Its diameter is 1.287 inches, with a thickness of 0.116 inches, making it approximately the same size as a U.S. half dollar coin.
Are American Gold Buffalo coins made of 24-karat gold?

How does the design of the Gold Buffalo coin honor American history?
The Gold Buffalo features a Native American profile on the obverse, inspired by James Earle Fraser’s 1913 Buffalo Nickel design. The design reflects early 20th-century American coinage and themes associated with the American West.

Upon your acknowledgment, your selected purchase and gold price will be confirmed on a voice recorded line and a written confirmation will be sent to you with the details of your order.

Yes. Monex offers a two-way market for 1 oz American Buffalo gold coins. To sell, call a Monex Account Representative. Once the coins are received and verified, the sale price is agreed upon and payment is issued.
Investment Insights
What is the difference between Gold Buffalo and Gold Eagle coins?
The Gold Buffalo is struck in .9999 fine gold, while the American Gold Eagle is .9167 fine gold and alloyed for durability. Both 1 oz versions contain one full ounce of gold. The Buffalo has a classic U.S. Mint design inspired by the Buffalo Nickel, while the Eagle features Lady Liberty and a bald eagle. Both are steeped in American history, government-issued and IRA-eligible.
What makes American Gold Buffalo coins unique compared to other U.S. gold coins?
The American Gold Buffalo was the first U.S. Mint bullion coin struck in .9999 fine gold. It contains no alloy metals and is produced entirely in 24-karat gold. The design is based on the 1913 Buffalo Nickel, giving the coin a historic American theme that differs from other modern U.S. Mint gold issues.
IRA & Retirement Options
Are American Buffalo Gold Coins eligible for Precious Metals IRAs?
Yes. The American Buffalo is .9999 fine gold and they are IRA-approved gold coins for use in your gold IRA.
Why do some investors prefer Gold Buffalo coins for IRAs?
American Gold Buffalo coins meet the IRS purity requirements for inclusion in a precious-metal IRA. That said, most investors choose the coin itself first. The Gold Buffalo is often selected for its classic American design and its .9999 fine gold purity, and some buyers then decide to hold those coins within a retirement account.
How do I add Gold Buffaloes to my IRA through Monex?
To add IRA-eligible 1 oz American Buffalo Gold Coins to an IRA, you will work directly with an IRS-approved custodian to establish and fund your IRA account. Your Account Representative will connect you with a custodian upon request.
Once your IRA is funded, Monex executes the purchase at your direction and arranges insured delivery to an approved depository in the custodian’s name, as required for IRA holdings.
Pricing & Premiums
How much does an American Buffalo Gold coin cost today?
The purchase price of the American Buffalo is at the Monex Ask price. In addition, there are charges such as commission and shipping. There is no shipping charge if you select depository delivery. Today's ask price per coin for buying in units of ten is: $4,514.20.
How much does Monex charge in addition to the spot gold price?
Monex does not offer gold bars or gold coins at a spot gold price. The true spot gold price is merely a benchmark per-ounce price for gold, not a price for a particular product, and is a reference price associated with the present month of the COMEX futures contract. In fact, a genuine spot gold price is not truly a quote at all, because it is not where dealers offer to buy or sell, which are their ask and bid prices. Monex makes a market for buying and selling quoted as “Ask” and “Bid” prices. Ask prices for gold products reflect competitive marketplace conditions for a particular type of gold investment item. There are, however, charges that accompany transactions, which include buy/sell charges, shipping or storage fees depending if the customer chooses home or depository delivery. Monex quotes extremely competitive prices for gold bullion depository delivery. Monex publishes buy/sell commission charges, which depend on the size of a transaction. For greater transparency, the Monex marketplace is quoted live online on its Live Prices page or through the powerful Monex Bullion Investor smartphone app available for both Apple and Android smartphones.
What makes Monex American Buffalo gold coin pricing competitive?
It is easy to confirm that Monex offers some of the best prices on American Buffalo gold coins by comparing our prices with those of other dealers. But what sets Monex apart is that we also feature transparent pricing. We publish both ask and bid prices on our website. That “spread” – the difference between our “ask” and “bid” prices – tends to be far less than many other dealers. We also offer lower Atlas Preferred Prices on purchases made with the Monex Atlas Account on several of our bullion bar and coin products. Call us today to learn more about Monex’s pricing advantages.
Do American Gold Buffalo coins carry a different premium than Gold Eagles?
Premiums on Gold Buffalo and Gold Eagle coins can vary with market demand and supply. Both are widely traded U.S. Mint bullion coins, and their premiums generally fluctuate within similar ranges, though one may trade slightly higher than the other at different times.
