Gold American Eagle Design and Specifications

Historically, investors acquire gold for the stability, liquidity and diversity it may provide to a portfolio. Monex proudly offers the American Eagle Gold Coin, the first modern-day gold bullion coin to be authorized by Congress and backed by the U.S. Mint’s weight, content and purity guarantee.

The obverse of the American Eagle gold coin features Lady Liberty holding an olive branch and a torch with a rising sun and the U.S. Capitol dome in the background; and is inscribed with the word “Liberty,” the issue date and mint mark. The coin’s reverse depicts a male bald eagle grasping an olive branch flying towards his mate embracing her hatchlings in a nest.

All American Eagle gold bullion coins are 22 karat (or .9167 fine) gold, containing an alloy of silver and copper to increase the stability and scratch-resistance of the coins. Each coin is guaranteed to contain an exact quantity of gold, mined exclusively in the United States, and to meet the rigid quality standards of the U.S. Mint.

One ounce gold American Eagles are sold in units of 10 coins. Coinage purchased outright may be delivered to you or stored in an independent third party vault. Additionally, these coins are suitable for an IRA investment. Each of the fractional gold American Eagle coins are sold in units of 20 coins each for personal delivery only.

Frequently Asked Questions

About This Series

In which year was the gold American Eagle first issued?

The oldest Gold American Eagle bullion coin has the date 1986. That year was the very first year of issue for the United States Mint Bullion Coin program.

What is an American Gold Eagle coin?

The United States Mint issues Gold American Eagles as legal tender gold bullion coins for investment purposes, under congressional authority. The family of Gold Eagles consists of four sizes and face values. Though they are technically money, their face value is insignificant compared to their intrinsic value, and they do not circulate as coinage. By far, one of the most popular and most liquid sizes of almost all coins is the one-ounce $50 face value American Gold Eagle.

What is the gold content of the American Eagle coin?

Although not considered pure gold, the Gold American Eagle maintains strong popularity with investors looking to add gold coins to their portfolio. The Gold Eagle consists of 91.67% gold, 5.33% copper and 3% silver resulting in an approximately 22 karat coin, as opposed to the 24 karats found in the pure gold American Buffalo coins. The $50 face value gold Eagle weighs 1.0909 troy ounces, or 33.93 grams, and is 32.7 mm in diameter and 2.87 mm thick. However, each coin contains precisely one troy ounce of pure gold. The $10 Gold Eagle weighs 0.2727 troy ounces and is precisely .25 troy ounces of pure gold, and the $5 Gold Eagle weighs 0.1091 troy ounces and is precisely .1 troy ounces of pure gold.

Are American Gold Eagle coins legal tender?

Yes. American Gold Eagle coins are legal tender in the United States. The 1 oz Gold Eagle has a $50 face value, with lower denominations for fractional sizes. In practice, they are bought and sold at prices that reflect the current gold price.

How does Monex verify the authenticity of American Gold Eagle coins?

Monex sources American Gold Eagles directly from trusted distributors and verifies each coin based on weight, dimensions, design details, and mint specifications. Because Gold Eagles are produced to strict U.S. Mint standards, they’re easy to identify and verify.

What is the difference between bullion Gold Eagles and proof Gold Eagles?

Bullion Gold Eagles are made for investors and priced in line with gold. Proof Gold Eagles feature a polished finish and command higher premiums because of limited production and collector interest.

Is there a minimum number of Gold American Eagles I must purchase in one transaction?

Buying and selling gold bullion coins in larger quantities offers greater efficiency, which means better pricing for you. What is the difference between American Gold Eagle coins and American Gold Buffalo coins?

American Gold Eagles are struck in a 22-karat gold alloy containing one full troy ounce of gold and other metals for hardness. American Gold Buffalos are struck in .9999 fine (24-karat) gold. Both are U.S. Mint products; Gold Eagles are often favored for their durability and liquidity, while Buffalos appeal to investors seeking higher purity.

Why are American Gold Eagles a popular choice for long-term gold investors?

American Gold Eagles have been a staple of the U.S. gold market for decades. Their resale market and IRA eligibility make them a practical option for long-term gold ownership.

Pricing & Premiums

How much does Monex charge in addition to the spot gold price?

Monex does not offer gold bars or gold coins at a spot gold price. The true spot gold price is merely a benchmark per-ounce price for gold, not a price for a particular product, and is a reference price associated with the present month of the COMEX futures contract. In fact, a genuine spot gold price is not truly a quote at all, because it is not where dealers offer to buy or sell, which are their ask and bid prices. Monex makes a market for buying and selling quoted as “Ask” and “Bid” prices. Ask prices for gold products reflect competitive marketplace conditions for a particular type of gold investment item. There are, however, charges that accompany transactions, which include buy/sell charges, shipping or storage fees depending if the customer chooses home or depository delivery. Monex quotes extremely competitive prices for gold bullion depository delivery. Monex publishes buy/sell commission charges, which depend on the size of a transaction. For greater transparency, the Monex marketplace is quoted live online on its Live Prices page or through the powerful Monex Bullion Investor smartphone app available for both Apple and Android smartphones.

What is the cost of a one ounce Gold Eagle to purchase?

The purchase price of a one ounce Gold American Eagle is at the Monex Ask price. In addition, there are charges such as commission and shipping. There is no shipping charge if you select depository delivery. Today's ask price per coin for buying in units of ten is: $4,473.40.

What makes Monex American Eagle gold coin pricing competitive?

It is easy to confirm that Monex offers some of the best prices on American Eagle gold coins by comparing our prices with those of other dealers. But what sets Monex apart is that we also feature transparent pricing. We publish both ask and bid prices on our website. That “spread” – the difference between our “ask” and “bid” prices – tends to be far less than many other dealers. We also offer lower Atlas Preferred Prices on purchases made with the Monex Atlas Account on several of our bullion bar and coin products. Call us today to learn more about Monex’s pricing advantages.

How do premiums on American Gold Eagles compare to other gold coins?

Compared ounce-for-ounce, American Gold Eagles typically cost more than gold bars but are often priced in line with other widely traded government-minted coins. Their premiums reflect demand and an active resale market, which many investors consider a fair tradeoff for liquidity and recognition.

Storage, Delivery & Insurance

How are American Gold Eagles packaged and shipped?

American Gold Eagles are packaged securely and shipped via insured, secure carriers. Tracking information is provided once the shipment is released.

Are my American Eagle gold coins insured during delivery?

All gold coin shipments to you are insured against loss or damage in transit, whether delivered to your home or to a depository. If you decide to have your American Eagle gold coins delivered to and stored by a bank/depository, it remains fully insured while in storage as well.

How does American Eagle gold coin storage work through Monex?

Monex can arrange secure storage for your Gold American Eagle investment. We will deliver your gold coins with full title and ownership in your name to one of the independent bank/depository facilities that provide storage for Monex customers. When your metal is received by the third-party depository, the facility's custodian will send you a document acknowledging receipt and verifying that you are the owner of the American Eagle gold coins being stored.
