Gold Coins
Typically kept as an investment rather than used in everyday commerce, a bullion coin is made from a specific precious metal and produced by a government mint. In fact, non-government minted versions must be referred to as ’rounds’ or ‘medals’ and may not legally use the term ‘coins.’ Popular with today’s investors, gold bullion coins are readily available for purchase, convenient to safeguard and store, simple to divide between investors, and widely recognizable making them easy to sell or trade.
Monex offers the most popular pure gold coins available hailing from mints around the world including the U.S. Mint, the Royal Canadian Mint, an 800-year-old Austrian Mint in Vienna, and the South African Mint.
Your investment may include pure 24-carat gold bullion coins like the one ounce American Buffalo; the one ounce, quarter ounce and tenth ounce Vienna Philharmonic coins; and the one ounce, quarter ounce and tenth ounce Canadian Maple Leafs. 22-carat gold bullion coins, which are generally thought to be more durable as they contain added metals such as copper or silver, are also popular investment options. Varieties include the American Eagle gold coin series containing exactly one ounce, quarter ounce or tenth ounce of pure gold and the South African Krugerrand which contains exactly one ounce of pure gold. For your convenience, Monex gold coins are available for sale online or by contacting one of our knowledgeable Account Representatives.

Investment Insights
Why should I invest in gold?
Gold is one of the premier alternative investments for financial portfolio diversification. As its change in value is most inversely correlated to the rise and fall of traditional paper asset classes, gold bullion can reduce overall portfolio volatility when coupled with stocks and bonds investments.
Furthermore, gold offers significant financial and monetary liquidity, making it strategically convenient to generate capital gains, raise cash for re-balancing, or take advantage of an opportunity in a temporarily depressed investment market sector. If the stock and bond markets are overvalued and potentially at risk for a significant correction, gold investments may provide a safe haven.
Should I invest in gold bars or gold coins?
Investing in any gold product can strengthen your portfolio and protect your wealth. Whether you choose gold coins, bars, or both is specific to your unique set of circumstances and personal comfort level. In general, coins are often an investor’s first foray into the gold marketplace. Conveniently compact in size, they are typically easy to safeguard, available in an interesting array of options, and retain both liquidity and, in certain instances, numismatic potential. When choosing to invest with Monex, you are assured your coins are of the highest quality and produced in one of the world’s few premier mints.
Gold bullion bars also have distinct advantages. Like their counterparts, bars are produced in various sizes ranging from 1 ounce to 1 kilo. They are a fast and reliable source of quick diversification allowing investors to purchase and obtain possession in a short period of time; because of less manufacturing overhead, gold bullion bars are less expensive per ounce than coins; and gold bars are simplistic in design making them easy to sell.
Finally, keep in mind differing requirements of resale when deciding on a gold product for investment. Dollar for dollar your coin and bar investment may be similar, coins in your physical personal possession can be sold without delay and the added expense of an assay; while bullion bars in your personal possession require verification of weight and fineness prior to sale. In the instance your bullion bar has been purchased from Monex and securely stored in an independent third-party depository, there will be no assay fees required.
Call a Monex account representative today. They are eager to discuss our inventory of gold products and assist you in finding the best fit for your unique circumstances.
What are common mistakes to avoid when investing in gold?
Common mistakes include purchasing from unfamiliar or unverified sellers, misunderstanding pricing and premiums, and concentrating too heavily on a single asset. Investors should understand how gold is priced, review bid-ask spreads, and consider how gold fits within their broader portfolio objectives before making a purchase.
IRA & Retirement Options
What types of gold bars and coins are eligible for IRAs?
Gold products eligible for a precious-metal IRA must meet IRS purity standards, generally .995 fine or higher for gold bars and certain government-issued bullion coins. Eligible gold coins typically include American Gold Eagles, American Gold Buffalos, Canadian Gold Maple Leafs, and other qualifying sovereign bullion coins. All IRA metals must be held by an approved custodian rather than stored personally.
How do I add gold to my IRA through Monex?
To add IRA-eligible gold bullion products to an IRA, you will work directly with an IRS-approved custodian to establish and fund your IRA account. Your Account Representative will connect you with a custodian upon request.
Once your IRA is funded, Monex executes the purchase at your direction and arranges insured delivery to an approved depository in the custodian’s name, as required for IRA holdings.
Pricing & Premiums
How is the price of gold determined?
The price of gold is determined by global supply and demand in international markets. It reflects transactions between buyers and sellers worldwide and responds to factors such as currency strength, interest rates, geopolitical developments, and investor demand. The quoted “spot price” represents the prevailing market price for gold at a given moment.
How does Monex pricing compare to other dealers?
Monex provides live precious metals prices, historical price charts, and current product pricing directly on its website. Investors can review market trends and understand how products are priced before making a decision. Monex account representatives are also available five days a week to answer questions. When comparing dealers, it is important to evaluate transparency, published pricing, and resale opportunities alongside the initial purchase price.
Storage, Delivery & Insurance
How long will it take to receive my gold?
Almost every investment in physical metal is unique. For this reason, calculating shipping timing for a unique gold purchase is not a universal answer. The delivery of your metal is dependent on several factors, including the quantity of metal, the time of your purchase, and other relevant details.
On average, physical metal will leave the shipping facility two to five days after confirmed, reliable good funds are received. Upon receipt of payment and confirmation of reliable good funds, Monex will direct one of its independent shipping facilities to package and assign it to either USPS or UPS for delivery. You will then receive an email or a telephone notification of your shipment’s tracking number.
During periods of extremely high shipping volume, you will be notified if any delays are anticipated. Call a Monex account representative to learn more about estimated shipping times for your unique investment.
Can I pick up my gold at Monex?
Though there is no facility in Newport Beach for pickup, Monex can arrange to have your gold investment delivered to any of 30 pick-up vault facilities located in 20 different states. You can also pick up your gold bullion bars and gold coins at Brink's locations in Toronto, Canada, San Juan, Puerto Rico and Singapore.
Can I store my gold investment through Monex?
Monex can arrange for the secure storage of your gold bullion or coin investments. We will deliver your gold with full title and ownership in your name to one of the independent bank/depository facilities that provide storage for Monex customers. When your metal is received by the third party depository, the custodian of the facility will send you a document acknowledging receipt and verifying you as owner of the gold being stored.
Is my gold investment insured?
All shipments of gold products to you are insured against loss or damage in transit. If you decide to have your gold delivered to and stored by a bank/depository, the metal is fully insured in transit and also while in storage.
